HL Deb 26 July 1983 vol 443 cc1523-4WA
Lord O'Hagan

asked Her Majesty's Government whether the cost of milk for the manufacture of Lymeswold is the same as the price paid by the manufacturers of traditional British Cheese.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Lord Belstead)

Manufacturing prices in England and Wales are negotiated between the Milk Marketing Board and the Dairy Trade Federation in the Joint Committee. The prices agreed vary according to the use of the milk. Lymeswold cheese, like Stilton, commands a premium, and producers through the Milk Marketing Board receive a higher return for the milk used to manufacture these cheeses than they receive from traditional English cheeses.
