§ Mr. Steenasked the Secretary of State for Transport, what is the policy of his Department towards the erection of signs on trunk roads welcoming drivers to a particular area.
§ Mr. ChalkerOur policy is to allow signs welcoming drivers to a particular area to be erected on trunk and other roads where the information is considered to be of use to motorists. We allow the names of district councils to be shown as additional information on signs giving the names 291W of towns, villages or other well known localities, but not by themselves because many do not have any recognisable geographical meaning to the majority of motorists.
