§ Mr. Frank Fieldasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost of raising the tax threshold to 68 per cent. of average earnings for all working taxpayers.
§ Mr. RidleyThe cost of increasing the married man's personal allowance to 68 per cent. of average male earnings would be about £16 billion in a full year at 1983–84 levels of income. This assumes that the single person's allowance would be increased in the same proportion. The allowance levels would be: married, £6,095; single and wife's earned income allowance, £3,905.
