HC Deb 11 July 1983 vol 45 c207W
52. Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Attorney-General if he will initiate proceedings against Mr. Ronald Gregory, formerly chief constable of west Yorkshire, for misuse of public funds and for breaches of the Official Secrets Acts.

The Attorney-General

I am not aware of any evidence of misuse of public funds on the part of the former chief constable of the West Yorkshire metropolitan police.

I take the reference to breaches of the Official Secrets Act to relate to the current serialisation of his memoirs in a national newspaper. In that context I refer to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for Bassetlaw (Mr. Ashton) last Thursday. What has occurred, tasteless and unprofessional though it is, is in my view outside both the scope of the Act and the mischief at which it was aimed.
