§ Mr. Stuart Hollandasked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will establish an independent monitoring committee of representatives from his Department, health workers, the infant food industry and consumer and development organisations, to ensure that the World Health Organisation international code of marketing of breast milk substitutes is followed.

Member for Fife, Central (Mr. Hamilton) on 28 June 1983.—[Vol. 44, c.66–7.] The draft voluntary code of practice drawn up by the Food Manufacturers Federation in consultation with Government Departments included proposals for the establishment of an independent committee to monitor compliance with the code. I will be making an announcement shortly about the monitoring arrangements that have been agreed in the light of our consultation on the draft proposals.
