§ Mr. Buchanan-SmithThe gas and electricity industries have modified their practices on standing charges, following proposals from the Government. I will continue to monitor the position, but the abolition of standing charges would increase unit rates and the bills of large consumers of gas or electricity, including many less well-off consumers. Independent consultants have recently examined the level of gas and electricity standing charges. Copies of their reports are in the Library of the House.
