§ Mr. William Powellasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied that the law relating to the issue of firearms certificates is effective; and what plans he has to ensure that criminals are prevented from carrying such weapons during the course of their unlawful activities.
§ Mr. HurdThe Firearms Act 1968 lays down strict controls over the possession and use of firearms. My right hon. and learned Friend has no present plans to propose further controls. The measures which police forces take to combat armed crime are an operational matter for chief officers. We are sure that they will continue to do all that they can to ensure that offenders are detected and brought before the courts. In that, they have the Government's full support.
