§ Mr. Buchanasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he has taken to try to secure that clemency is granted in the cases of Anthony Tsotsobe, Johannes Shabangu, David Moise, Jerry Mosololi, Simon Mogoerane and Marcus Motaung sentenced to death in South Africa on 19 August 1981 and 5 August 1982.
§ Mr. OnslowThese cases involve South African citizens who were convicted under South African law and we therefore have no formal standing in the matter. Nonetheless, we have supported appeals for clemency for these men at the United Nations. We, like other Governments, have also brought to the attention of the South African authorities the public concern in these cases and the hope that on humanitarian grounds the death sentences might be commuted.
