HC Deb 19 January 1983 vol 35 c160W
Mr. Fitch

asked the Secretary of State for Transport by how much the injury accident rate on roads has declined in the last 10 years.

Mrs. Chalker

The overall accident rate—injury accidents per vehicle-kilometre—declined by one fifth between 1971 and 1981. However, the reduction varies with different types of road and is partly explained by a change in the mix of vehicles in use. Relevant details can be found in tables 4 and 9 of "Road Accidents Great Britain 1981", a copy of which is in the Library.
