asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he has estimated the level of London Transport fares in 1983 if the current Transport Bill is passed.

The provisional figure of £220 million we have indicated we would be prepared to set as a protected expenditure level for Greater London means there is no need for any increase in London Transport fares in 1983–84. Effectively fares could be back at their September 1980 level in real terms by March 1984. The chairman of London Transport has welcomed the stability that this will bring. It will provide a firm foundation for his efforts, which I applaud, to secure more efficient and better integrated services and fares structures.
