§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of unemployed in the Newham area of east London; and if he will subdivide this (a) by age in the following categories (i) under 18 years, (ii) 18 to 24 years, (iii) 25 to 34 years, (iv) 35 to 44 years and (v) 45 to 64 years and (b) by duration in the following categories: (i) up to 26 weeks, (ii) 27 to 52 weeks., (iii) 53 to 104 weeks, (iv) 105 to 156 weeks and (v) over 156 weeks.
§ Mr. AlisonAt 13 January, the number of unemployed claimants in the area covered by the East Ham, Plaistow and Stratford jobcentres, which corresponds closely to Newham, was 17,443. An analysis of this figure according to the age and duration categories specified was as follows:
unemployed claimants—the new basis of the count—increased by 3 per cent. The figures include school leavers and are not seasonally adjusted.
