asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what would be the cost in 1983–84 of abolishing age allowances for (a) married couples and (b) single persons;

(2) what would be the cost of abolishing the clawback of age allowances in 1983–84 for (a) married couples and (b) single persons.

The information is as follows. The estimates are for a full year at 1983–84 income levels, with income tax allowances and thresholds indexed from their 1982–83 levels by reference to the statutory formula.
