asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, further to his answer of 9 February to the hon. Member for Tynemouth, Official Report, c. 318, if he will estimate the cost to the revenue of introducing an allowance to taxpayers in respect of travelling from their home to or from work similar to those in force in Belgium, Denmark, France, West Germany, and the Netherlands.

The estimated cost to the Revenue of introducing relief for home to work travel costs incurred by employees would be in the region of £1,200 million for a full year at forecast 1982–84 income levels.
