asked the Secretary of State for Employment by what percentage per year output per person employed in (a) the United Kingdom whole economy, (b) United Kingdom manufacturing industries, increased between 1973 and 1979, first quarter, and 1979 second quarter, and 1982, final quarter.

Mr. Gummer

Data on output per head for the whole United Kingdom economy and for manufacturing industries, from which rates of change can be calculated, are given in the "Monthly Digest of Statistics" (December 1982 issue). The latest estimates relate to the second and third quarters of 1982 respectively for the whole economy and manufacturing. Estimates for 1978 onwards are liable to revision and later data will be published in the February 1983 issue ofEmployment Gazette.

Data on output per person per hour for manufacturing industries, from which rates of change can be calculated, are given in the "Monthly Digest of Statistics" (December 1982 issue) and (for periods before 1976) "Economic Trends Annual Supplement" 1983 edition. The latest estimates relate to the third quarter of 1982. Similar information for the whole economy is not available. Estimates for 1978 onwards are liable to revision and later data will be published in the February 1983 issue ofEmployment Gazette.
