HC Deb 21 February 1983 vol 37 cc362-3W
Mr. Ginsburg

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the British detainees in Angola following the recent meetings in London with the Angolan Foreign Minister, and that of the British ambassador with the President of Angola.

Mr. Onslow

This subject was raised with the Minister for External Affairs by my right hon. Friends the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary, by me and, privately, by a number of hon. Members. Sr Jorge noted the strength of our concern. He said the Angolan Government was looking for an opportune moment to exercise clemency which he hoped would occur this year.

Our ambassador in Luanda made representations to the President about this subject on 9 February.
