HL Deb 15 February 1983 vol 439 c213WA
Baroness Hornsby-Smith

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they are taking to prohibit the use of monofilament gill nets within United Kingdom inshore fishing limits, which is nullifying EEC regulations on conservation of fishing stocks.

Earl Ferrers

The scientific evidence so far available would not justify a prohibition on the use of gill nets. However, Government scientists are carrying out further studies into the use of these nets in inshore waters and the Government will consider whether action is appropriate when the results of this work are available.
