§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make an additional specific allocation of resources for the teaching of science and the recruitment of science teachers in order to improve the academic attainment of 15-year-olds in scientific subjects.
§ Dr. BoysonIt is for local education authorities and schools to decide how they allocate the resources available to them between areas of the curriculum. In recent years recruitment of science teachers has been better and the number of unfilled vacancies in secondary schools has fallen. The Department's current consultations on science in the school curriculum are concerned with means of improving the teaching of science throughout primary and secondary education.
