HC Deb 10 February 1983 vol 36 c424W
Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what estimate he has made as to the number of trainees who would otherwise have been unemployed who are expected to be on the youth training scheme by the end of September 1983;

(2) what estimate he has made as to the number of trainees who are already in employment who are expected to be taken on to the youth training scheme by the end of September 1983.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The youth task group estimated that at 1 September 1983 there would be 507,900 16-year-olds in the labour market, of whom 210,000 would be in jobs and 297,300 might be unemployed if no special provision were made. The youth training scheme aims to provide over 400,000 places for young people by September 1983 and all unemployed 16-year-old school leavers have been guaranteed an early offer of a place on the scheme.
