HL Deb 10 February 1983 vol 438 cc1415-6WA
Baroness Jeger

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What recent consultations have taken place with the Governments of Greece and Turkey, as co-guarantors with the United Kingdom of the independence of Cyprus, about the future of the island; and what progress is being made towards the implementation of United Nations resolutions concerning Cyprus.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Belstead)

Formal consultations between the three guarantor powers last took place in 1974. However, Her Majesty's Government are in regular contact with all the parties involved in the Cyprus problem. Since 1974 there have been six General Assembly resolutions on Cyprus. The United Kingdom voted in favour of two and abstained on four. The resolutions contain a number of different proposals which have not yet been implemented. They also contain a common element in requesting the United Nations Secretary General to provide his good offices for negotiations between the two communities. In these efforts there has recently been some real, if limited, progress.
