Mr. John Carlisleasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the differing interpretations placed upon the terms of the Gleneagles agreement by some Commonwealth Governments who were party to it, he will make a statement of the Government's policy towards the agreement.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneThe 1977 Commonwealth statement on apartheid in sport—often referred to as the Gleneagles agreement—was drafted in terms of broad principles so as to allow individual Commonwealth Governments374W discretion to fulfil their obligations according to their own laws. The Government support the statement on apartheid in sport and seek therefore to discourage United Kingdom sports-people from sporting contacts with South Africa.
