§ Mr. Arther Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in preparing his forthcoming Budget he will consider a complete revision of the income tax rules and procedures in view of the unfairness in that single men and women pay more tax than married people and yet are unable to obtain the same benefits in that they have no social or welfare benefits for their spouses or non-existent children but have to contribute extra taxation to pay for other people's children's education, health and other welfare benefits.
§ Mr. WakehamI shall bear the hon. Gentleman's views in mind. The proper balance of taxation between single and married people is one of the matters discussed in the Green Paper on the taxation of husband and wife published in December 1980.
