HC Deb 04 February 1983 vol 36 c200W
Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many jobs have been created and how many lost in each year since 1975 in the Kirkintilloch travel-to-work area.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Comprehensive information on job gains and losses is not available. The net change in total employment in the Kirkintilloch local employment office area in each year between 1975 and 1978—the latest date for which information is available—as measured by the annual census of employment, was as follows:

Change
1975 +541
1976 +155
1977 -379
1978 +415

There are no separate measures of gross employment change. But the total number of new jobs associated with offers of selective financial assistance in the Kirkintilloch local employment office area during the period 1975 to January 1983 was 170. This understates the true number of jobs gained, since new jobs will have been created in the absence of such assistance. The possibility of disclosure of individual offer information prevents publication of annual totals. The total number of redundancies notified to MSC Scotland as due to occur in the Kirkintilloch local employment office area since 1977 was as follows:

Number redundant
1977 156
1978
1979 108
1980 371
1981 249
1982 224

Note: These figures are not fully comprehensive. They cover instances of redundancy involving 10 or more workers notified to MSC Scotland. Those for 1981 and 1982 are not directly comparable with earlier years, because of improvements in data collection and processing procedures. Complete figures for 1975 and 1976 are not available.
