§ Mr. Nealeasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement about future provisions for acceptances in lieu of tax and for the national heritage memorial fund.
§ Mr. KingI am pleased to announce, together with my right hon. Friend the Minister for the Arts, a joint allocation of £2 million for acceptances in lieu of tax in the financial year 1983–84, subject to parliamentary approval. This provision is within the programme totals given in the public expenditure White Paper, Cmnd. 8789, published on 1 February.
In the case of the national heritage memorial fund, it is proposed that the joint grant of £3 million which the Government were planning to make to the fund during 1983–84 should instead be made available in the current financial year. This sum, together with the additional payment of £5 million announced by my predecessor on 15 November 1982, will be found from the Contingency Reserve and is again subject to parliamentary approval of the necessary Supplementary Estimate.
