§ Mr. Altonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in view of the fact that there is 16 times more lead in the water of Liverpool than elsewhere in the United Kingdom, he will introduce a system of grants for the replacement of lead pipes in domestic properties.
178W
§ Mr. Giles ShawIn September 1982, the home improvement grant scheme was modified by statutory instrument—1982 No. 1205—so that local authorities are now enabled to give grants for the replacement of lead piping where this seems to be the appropriate way of dealing with high lead levels in drinking water.
Department of the Environment circular (22/82) to local authorities sets out the details and gives more general advice in ways of dealing with the various hazards that may arise from lead in the environment.
