asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many 14 to 17-year-olds were admitted to detention centres and borstals in each year from 1979 to 1982.

The number and age of those aged under 21 received into prison department establishments in England and Wales having been given a detention centre order or sentenced to borstal training is published annually in "Prison statistics England and Wales", table 3.1 of the volume for 1981, Cmnd. 8654. Information for 1982 is not yet available.
