HL Deb 21 December 1983 vol 446 c827WA
The Marquess of Ailesbury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why the Windscale nuclear reprocessing plant was renamed Sellafield; and whether in the light of recent events further changes of name should now be anticipated?

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Energy (The Earl of Avon)

The Sellafield site comprises both the Windscale Chemical Reprocessing Plants and the Calder Hall Magnox power station. The name Sellafield was adopted in March 1981 to apply to the whole site because of organisational and managerial changes. Sellafield is the old and established name for the locality. I am informed that no change is planned.
