HL Deb 21 December 1983 vol 446 cc827-8WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many homeless single men and women there were in Greater London and in England and Wales respectively, including those living in Salvation Army and similar hostels, at the latest convenient date.

Lord Skelmersdale

There are no figures available on the number of homeless single men and women in Greater London, and in England and Wales, nor for the hostel accommodation provided by local authorities and voluntary organisations. I understand, however, that the number of bed spaces available for single homeless men in London resettlement units run by the Department of Health and Social Security is currently 880 and for women 50. The Government is carrying out a major expansion in the provision of modern hostels. Under the Government hostels initiative, 7,500 places have been provided since May 1979 through housing associations. including places for homeless people.
