HL Deb 20 December 1983 vol 446 c708WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware that the average contribution made in the years 1979–82 by the companies of the eight directors of private companies granted peerages exceeds £100,000 each and, as there is a limit on expenditure by candidates at general elections, whether there should not also be a limit on the national expenditure of political parties.

Lord Elton

Expenditure which is incurred by a political party in promoting or procuring the election of its individual candidates is subject to statutory limits and must be included in the return of each candidate's election expenses. It is for the courts to decide whether expenditure is or is not subject to the statutory limits in any particular case.
