HC Deb 20 December 1983 vol 51 c113W
Mr. Norman Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Transport to whom complaints about the British Transport police should be submitted; who is responsible for first considering the validity of such complaints; who investigates such complaints; and who decides whether or not they should be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr. David Mitchell

The same complaints procedure applies to the British Transport police as to any other police force. These are set out in Cmnd. 9072, paragraphs 4 and 5.

Mr. Norman Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Transport to whom the British Transport police force is accountable; and if he proposes any change in the future.

Mr. David Mitchell

The chief constable of the British Transport police is responsible for the administration of the force to the British Transport Police Committee under paragraph 4 of the British Transport Police Force Scheme 1963 (Approval) Order 1964—S.I. 1964, No. 1456—and in accordance with directions from time to time given to him by that committee. There are no plans for changing the statutory instrument.
