§ Sir Dudley Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) to whom the operators of the police national computer are allowed to divulge information as to the name and address of the registered owner of a particular car;
(2) what steps are taken to preserve the confidentiality of car registration particulars on the police national computer, apart from the legitimate needs of the police in their operational activities.
§ Mr. HurdThe code of practice for the protection of personal data held on the police national computer, a copy of which is in the Library of the House, provides that data should be used only for police purposes, except that data may be supplied to persons or organisations outside the police service at the discretion of a chief officer of police.
The code of practice also sets out standards for the physical, technical and operational security of personal data.
