HC Deb 19 December 1983 vol 51 cc65-6W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in how many cases in the latest year for which figures are conveniently available it has been found that an individuals national insurance number is incorrect.

Dr. Boyson

For the year ended 5 April 1983, the number of documents received at the Department's central office at Newcastle with the wrong national insurance number was 518,493.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services at what precise point in a person's life a national insurance number is allocated; and how this is communicated to the person concerned.

Dr. Boyson

Most people are allocated a national insurance number shortly before they reach age 16. They are individually notified by means of a National Insurance number card which is mailed to them from the DHSS central office at Newcastle.

Other registrants, such as people who have recently arrived in the United Kingdom for the first time, or who were not registered during the routine procedure for juveniles, apply for a number at their local DHSS office. Again, a national insurance number card is issued to the person concerned from the central point of Newcastle central office.
