HC Deb 19 December 1983 vol 51 cc17-8W
Mr. Bottomley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the number and average or total value of homes in estates of deceased people in the latest available year; and if similar information is available for 1970, 1960 and 1953.

Mr. Moore

No information is available on estates of which no account has been submitted to the Inland Revenue. They may include residential property which is jointly owned, particularly in recent years. For those estates where an account has been submitted the information is:

Year Number owning residential property Value of residential property (£ Millon) Average value (£ million)
1981–82 142,000 3,125 21,900
1970–71 142,000 530 3,720
1960–61 85,200 228 2,675

Notes:

1. The figures are for estates coming to the notice of the Inland Revenue in the year shown.

2. The figures for 1960–61 and 1970–71 relate to Great Britain only but those for 1981–82 include Northern Ireland.

3. No comparable information is available for 1953.

4. Columns are rounded independently.
