§ Mr. Kilfedderasked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the percentage increase in earnings agreed or awarded since 1965 for the following 45W groups: miners, shipyard workers, civil servants, schoolteachers, local government officials, doctors, motor car industry workers, farm workers, health service workers, university lecturers, and hon. Members.
§ Mr. Alan ClarkThe available information relates to changes in average weekly earnings for those categories of employee distinguished in the results of the new earnings survey since 1970. Information for earlier years on a comparable basis is not available.
The following table shows the percentage change in average weekly earnings — including overtime, bonus and shift pay and so on—between April 1970 and April 1983.
Figures for individual years can be affected by the variable timing of pay settlements in relation to the date of the survey. Average earnings will reflect many influences on pay other than changes in rates of pay for a standard week—for example, changes in overtime and bonus earnings. They may also reflect changes in the structure of employment—for example, changes in the relative numbers at different grades or levels of skill and responsibility.
