Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations were made to him by Mr. John Cheek and Mr. Anthony Blake on their way to the United Nations about the normalisation of relations with Argentina.

Mr. Whitney

Councillors Cheek and Blake passed through London on their way to New York in August and again in November. Although they did not see my right hon. and learned Friend on either occasion, they had their normal wide-ranging talks with Foreign and Commonwealth Office Ministers and Officials. Details of these discussions are confidental but Mr. Cheek said in a BBC Radio interview on 13 December that while he believed that there could be no question of negotiations on sovereignty "if Britain and Argentina return to normality I think that is a good thing.
