HC Deb 13 December 1983 vol 50 cc412-3W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will introduce a national system of radioactive dose records to be administered by the National Radiological Protection Bureau.

Mr. Gummer

The question of establishing a national index of dose records is under consideration in the context of the Health and Safety Commission's proposals for new ionising radiation regulations.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will reduce the maximum radiation dose limit from 5 rems to a target figure of 1 rem as recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection.

Mr. Gummer

The International Commission on Radiological Protection has made no such recommendation. Its currently recommended whole body dose limit for workers is 5 rems per year; this has been endorsed by the National Radiological Protection Board for application in this country, and is also incorporated in the relevant European Community directive.
