HC Deb 13 December 1983 vol 50 c405W
Mr. Andrew MacKay

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has made a decision about a site for the third National Garden Festival in 1989.

Sir George Young

We received proposals from a number of authorities in England, Scotland and Wales concerning a total of 19 sites. We have decided to proceed with a detailed study of three of them: Gateshead (Norwood-Redheugh), Glasgow (Princes dock) and Swansea (Lower Swansea valley). The study, which will be completed in the summer, will provide information on a consistent basis on aspects such as costs, design possibilities and likely income. The timing will enable the early results from the Liverpool festival to be assimilated before a final decision is made.
