HC Deb 13 December 1983 vol 50 c418W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what specific aid is given by the United Kingdom for mental health and mental handicap to under-developed countries; how this aid is distributed; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Raison

There are no sectoral allocations within the aid programme and therefore no funds specifically set aside for mental health. However, activities funded under our regular aid programme contribute directly or indirectly to the health and well-being of the mentally handicapped and to the prevention of such handicap. For example, 27 trainees from developing countries are being supported by the aid programme to undertake courses in the United Kingdom in the nursing, teaching and rehabilitation of the mentally disabled; in addition there are a number of trainees—602 man-years in 1982—in the medical and health services field who will contribute to the general health of the community which will help to alleviate the problems of mental handicap.
