asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the examination results of pupils at comprehensive schools, as compared to those obtained in earlier years at grammar and secondary modern schools.

As I explained in my statement of 28 November in connection with the recent report by the National Council for Educational Standards, the relationship between examination results and factors such as the organisation of schools is a difficult area for research and I have asked the Department to assess for me various possibilities for further research.
