HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c338W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received regarding the current level at which stamp duty is applied on house purchase; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moore

I have received a number of letters suggesting an increase in the threshold above which stamp duty is paid on house purchase. The same point has also been made in some of the responses to the consultative document; others however have suggested that it might be preferable to retain, or lower, the present threshold and to change the rate scale. Stamp duty thresholds and rates are reviewed each year at the time of the Budget.
