* Percentage change—As figures for local authority expenditure in 1974–75 are not readily available, the percentage changes have been calculated from a common 1977–78 base for ease of comparison.
† Local authority highway expenditure
(a) Expenditure for 1974–75—Figures are not available by class of authority, by cash outturn.
(b) Highway administration—The figures are those underlying the public expenditure category shown as "local transport administration" in public expenditure white papers. Two classification changes were made in 1982–83 onwards, transferring a significant amount of expenditure from local transport administration to capital and maintenance.
‡ Department of Transport motorway and trunk roads expenditure
(a) Maintenance expenditure includes the reconstruction work classified as capital from 1983–84. It also includes an element for other expenditure such as road safety.
(b) Highways administration is funded jointly with the Department's other administrative costs from the Transport Services and Central Administration (Department of Transport) Vote. A separate breakdown for particular services is not available.
