§ Mr. Robert Banksasked the Secretary of State for Transport what evidence he has received about the damage to bridges and underground structures arising from the introduction of the 38-tonne limit.
§ Mrs. ChalkerMy Department has no evidence of any increased damage to bridges and underground structures as a result of the introduction of the 38-tonne lorry. The axle number and spacings of the 38-tonne lorry have been restricted in such a way that the loading on bridges and underground structures is generally no worse than that from the heavy lorries previously permitted.
