HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c309W
Mr. Robert Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what evidence he has received about the damage to bridges and underground structures arising from the introduction of the 38-tonne limit.

Mrs. Chalker

My Department has no evidence of any increased damage to bridges and underground structures as a result of the introduction of the 38-tonne lorry. The axle number and spacings of the 38-tonne lorry have been restricted in such a way that the loading on bridges and underground structures is generally no worse than that from the heavy lorries previously permitted.
