Mr. Hurd

The only information available centrally is from a special survey undertaken by the Metropolitan police for the third quarter of 1982, for the details of which I would refer the hon. Member to an answer I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Westminster, North (Mr. Wheeler) on 25 July.—[Vol. 46, c. 280–81.] In addition research study No. 4 conducted for the Royal Commission on criminal procedure — a copy of which is in the Library—in particular table 2.2, gives some information derived from a sample survey of four police stations.

Mr. Alex Carlile

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, for the most recent year for which statistics are available, and by police area, how many people were arrested and held in police custody prior to charge.

Mr. Hurd

The total number of people arrested in each police force area in England and Wales in 1982 was published in table 2 of the Home Office statistical bulletin 5/83, "Statistics on the operation of section 62: Criminal Law Act 1977—England and Wales 1982", a copy of which is in the Library. Information about the number of people later detained in police custody before charge is not available centrally.
