HC Deb 01 December 1983 vol 49 cc591-2W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his estimate of the success to date of the community programme; whether he will increase the proportion of his Department's resources devoted to the community programme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The community programme has proved to be very successful; at the end of October there were 106,000 people employed on temporary jobs created by the programme. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment announced on 16 November—[Vol. 48, c. 481–82]—that an additional £10 million would be provided for the programme for this financial year, subject to parliamentary approval, and within the total grant-in-aid of the Manpower Services Commission.

It is the Government's intention that the Manpower Services Commission should run the programme for a further two years until October 1986 and adhere to the existing target of 130,000 filled places.
