§ Mr. RidleyThe average amount of income tax paid by those liable only at the basic rate or at the reduced rate in 1978–79 was £775. The average payment by basic rate taxpayers in 1983–84 is estimated at £1,300 —an increase of 68 per cent. over 1978–79. This compares with an increase of about 71 per cent. in the retail price index.
