HL Deb 25 April 1983 vol 441 c798WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What were the numbers of convictions for drunkenness and drunk driving in Scotland in 1981 and 1982 respectively.

The Earl of Mansfield

The term "drunkenness" is taken to mean offences of being drunk and incapable, drunk and disorderly, drunk in or attempting to enter a designated sports ground and similar offences, and "drunk driving" to include driving a motor vehicle while blood alcohol content is above the prescribed level, and the offence of failing to provide breath, blood or urine specimens.

On this basis, the numbers of persons in Scotland in 1981 against whom charges of "drunkenness" and "drunk driving" were proved were 11,329 and 11,244 respectively.

Figures for 1982 are not yet available.
