§ Mr. Allan StewartOn 5 April 1983 a total of 693 persons were held in Scottish penal establishments on remand awaiting trial. In the first three months of 1983 the average daily number of prisoners held on remand awaiting trial was 653.
In 1982 the estimated average period spent by all prisoners in custody awaiting trial in Scottish penal establishments was 18 days.
No persons have been released from custody in Scotland in the last four years because they have been in custody for 110 days.
