§ Mr. NewtonIn November 1978 the rates of child benefit and one-parent benefit were £3 and £2, respectively. From November 1983 the figures will be £6.50 and £4.05. If, by way of illustration, there were to be an increase in the retail price index of 6 per cent. between November 1982 and November 1983, the real value of the November 1978 rates would then be £5.12 and £3.41.
