§ Mr. Leightonasked the Prime Minister whether any assessment has been made by Her Majesty's Government of the extent to which Government organisation and funding of a "Buy British" campaign could contravene article 30 of the Treaty of Rome.
The Prime MinsterYes. A Government campaign to encourage the purchase of British-made goods regardless of price and quality would contravene article 30 of the Treaty of Rome. But is is the policy of the United Kingdom Government to buy British goods whenever their price and quality are competitive, and I urge everyone to do the same.
