HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 c537W
Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when prison rules were last revisd; if he has any proposals to update the rules; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mayhew

Prison rules were laid before Parliament in their entirety on 11 March 1964 and came into operation on 25 March 1964.

There has been no general revision since, although individual rules have from time to time been amended. The last occasion was on 29 March 1982, upon the introduction of partly-suspended sentences, amending prison rule 5.

Rules will be needed to enable the implementation of the youth custody provisions of the Criminal Justice Act, and we shall consider in due course what implications that may have for the prison rules.
