HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 c490W
Mr. Alexander

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he has accepted the recommendation in the report of the Rayner scrutiny on national insurance contribution records that the compatibility check should be abolished.

Mr. Rossi

No. The compatibility check identifies people who have paid the wrong kind of national insurance contribution, and to abandon it could sometimes involve a substantial loss of benefit rights or of refunds. I have decided instead not to output for action compatibility check failures involving an employee's annual contribution of less than twice the weekly lower earnings limit for contribution liability; this limit is currently £29.50.
